Herniated Disc
A disc that due to use, injury or disease, bulges outside its normal area, causing pain and limiting function.
The discs act as shock absorbers for the spine and keep it flexible. If the discs are damaged, they may bulge or break open (rupture).
Why do discs herniate? Discs are primarily composed of water. As we become older (after the age of 30), the water content decreases, so the discs begin to shrink and lose their shape. When the disc becomes smaller the space between the vertebrae decreases and become narrower. Also, as the disc loses water content the disc itself becomes less flexible.
Dr.Shoshany is a Chiropractor in New York City that utilizes spinal decompression and whole body vibration. He says that WBV provides an excellent treatment for patients suffering with herniated discs.
Dr. L. Joe Stucky a Chiropractor in Eau Claire, WI says that WBV has therapeutic benefits that will accelerate the rehabilitation of injured disk tissue as well as enhance spinal correction.
Dr. Robert Duvall, DPT, ATC, MGFI suggests a host of exercises and stretches to help with herniated discs.
Effects of vibration therapy on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
Conclusion: Vibration therapy may be effective to reduce chronic back pain and increase the femoral neck and lumbar BMD in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. (RUAN Xiang-yan, JIN Feng-yuChinese Medical Journal, 2008) 1158
It seems as though exercising and WBV may be an effective part of herniated disc treatment after it has healed. Many WBV companies list acute herniated disc in their list of contraindications. Consult your health care provider before attempting any type of exercise if you have herniated discs. When trying WBV with back issues remember to keep your knees bent and try slower speeds below 10 at first. Try a minute or two at first and build up to longer sessions. Discontinue WBV if any of your back related symptoms occur.
It's important to know that there are two types of Vibration technologies available; Linear and Oscillating. They are both Vibration machines but the difference is how the vibration is 'delivered' to the body. T-Zone Health uses Oscillating Technology which is the technology that is most popular with Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and rehab
institutions. If your Health Care Provider would like more information on WBV, please have them contact T-Zone Health.
We always suggest trying the machine for a few free trial sessions at one of our Vibration Studio.
