Heart Transplant
Had a customer today who was a heart transplant patient in May 09. She had suffered 2 heart attacks which damaged her heart to the point that she needed a transplant. She also had brain surgery at Xmas time for an aneurism that was caused by an infection of some sort.  She is currently on an iv antibiotic for 6 months but has been advised that it will be shortened to 4 months as she is doing well.

She loved the feeling she received from the VT12...she was an inspiring women given all that she has gone through and is very interested in  whether  WBV could be  a potential alternative for her to pursue...

Due to the seriousness and complexity of this individual’s medical history it is essential that she discusses the use of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) with a physician before adding it to her exercise routine. There are several contraindications that may be applicable to this individual which would prevent her from using the WBV platform. Potential contraindications are listed below. They should be discussed with a physician so it can be decided if the benefits of using WBV outweigh any potential health risks. Contraindications are recommended due to the lack of research in a particular area or when there is a known negative consequence to using WBV.  Without the research it cannot be determined if the benefits of using WBV, in fact, would outweigh any potential risks.

Contraindications

  • Cardiac conditions are considered a contraindication as there is a risk for acute decompensation.
  • A known neurological condition (recent aneurysm) is considered a contraindication as the vibration may cause dizziness or other symptoms that may put the individual at risk for falling while on the machine. The vibration, although much less intense in the neck and head, may also lead to symptoms such as headaches which an individual may not find tolerable.
  • Recent surgery is a contraindication as there is concern that the vibration will delay healing.
  • If there are any metal or synthetic implants from this individual’s previous surgeries, there is a concern that the vibration may cause the implants to migrate.
  • Acute infection is considered a contraindication. This individual is currently being treated with antibiotics for an infection. It is important that the infection is no longer present before beginning WBV.
  • Given the complexity of this individual’s medical history there may be a contraindication not listed that is relevant to his/her condition. It is essential that the individual discusses WBV with his/her physician.

If cleared by a physician to use WBV, it should be initiated at a reduced intensity and duration. This is so an individual can become accustomed to the machine and monitor any potential symptoms. If any symptoms become worse or arise while using WBV it should be discontinued and new symptoms should be discussed with a physician. Once an individual adjusts to the WBV platform, intensity and duration can be increased as tolerated. Exercises can also be added at the appropriate fitness level. In general, if an individual experiences any pain, dizziness or shortness in breath while using WBV it should be discontinued immediately.
