Claudication and Whole Body Vibration
The term claudication literally means “limping”. Intermittent claudication refers to an aching, burning, tired pain in the legs that comes and goes and is usually caused by poor circulation in the legs. It is one of the most common symptoms of peripheral artery disease. It typically occurs during walking or other exercise and is relieved once the exercise has stopped. This is because narrowing of the arteries in the leg results in poor oxygen supply which becomes even more noticeable when oxygen requirements in these muscles increase (exercise). This condition leads to significant functional impairments and increased risk of cardiovascular morbitity and mortality. Despite functional impairments claudication remains fairly stable and is generally treated conservatively with exercises protocols and drug therapies as well as addressing cardiovascular risk factors. Exercise has been found to be beneficial for intermittent claudication. Programs have been developed to assist in addressing functional impairments and improve a person’s ability to walk and participate in physical activity.
Whole body vibration (WBV) is considered a contraindication if somebody has an acute deep vein thrombosis or serious cardiovascular disease. Because intermittent claudication is a symptom of peripheral artery disease it is essential that any changes to an exercise program, including the addition of WBV, be discussed with a doctor to ensure that it is right for you. If WBV is cleared as an appropriate exercise it is important to start at a reduced time and intensity. The time and intensity of vibration can be increased as a person feels more comfortable with the platform. Exercise on the WBV platform should be discontinued when symptoms develop. If symptoms persist or worsen it may be advisable to discontinue using WBV. Worsening symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. Studies have found that WBV exercise improves blood circulation in the skin and muscles. Generally if an individual experiences pain, dizziness or shortness of breath while using the WBV platform exercise should be stopped immediately.
